I just realized that the main theme and lyrics to
Thoroughly Modern Millie
are a ripoff/homage/answer to
Anything Goes.
Is that like... something people have recognized? #YesIKnowTooMuchAboutMusicalsShutUp

And Make ‘Em Laugh is a copy of Be A Clown but since Cole Porter didn’t want to make an enemy of MGM so he let it slide.

It’s also possible that Donald O’Connor was just too much of a musicals badass to front on. That routine is legend.

Actually, no. Though I do suddenly have the sneaking suspicion The Street Where You Live from My Fair Lady is similar to something I can’t put my finger on.

I remember the first time I listened to Lumbye’s Steam Engine Gallop and knowing I had heard part of it before somewhere. And it drove me nuts until I figured it out.
(listen at 2.40 if it doesn’t start there)
(listen at 1.26)
I can’t imagine this being a coincidence, but by the time Entry of the Gladiators was written, Lumbye had been dead for decades and his music would’ve been fairly obscure.
